우리는 민주주의 실현을 위해 끝까지 행동할 것이다
오늘, 12월 10일은 세계인권선언기념일이다. 세계인권선언기념일은 1948년 유엔이 채택한 세계인권선언의 정신을 되새기는 날이다. 모든 사람은 태어날 때부터 자유롭고 존엄하며 평등하다. 그러나 2024년 오늘, 대한민국의 인권은 심각한 위기에 처해 있다.
불과 일주일 전, 민주주의와 헌법을 위반하며 시민을 향해 총을 겨눴던 이는 여전히 대한민국의 군통수권자이자 대통령이다. 후보 시절부터 성차별주의자임을 숨기지 않았던 그는 재임 기간 내내 여성과 소수자의 목소리를 억압하며 차별과 폭력을 심화시켰다. 한편 인권과 민주주의보다 정치적 이익만을 추구하는 위정자들의 행보로 인해 대한민국은 여전히 혼란 속에 있다. 대한민국의 인권과 민주주의를 지키는 것은 언제나 그랬듯, 시민들의 몫이다.
대한민국에서 여성인권은 언제나 우선순위가 되지 못했다. 지난해 여성살해 피해자 수는 최소 192명에 달하며, 지난 15년간 매년 최소 100여 명의 여성들이 여성폭력으로 목숨을 잃었다. 그러나 어떤 정부도 이 숫자의 무게를 중하게 여기지 않았다.
우리 사회의 인권과 민주주의 회복을 외치는 지금도, 여성이 인간임을 부정하는 목소리는 멈추지 않는다. 성폭력 2차 가해를 한 이가 시민을 대표하는 목소리를 내고, 야당의 교육연수원장이 집회에 참여하는 여성을 대상화하는 발언을 서슴지 않는다. 그럼에도 더 많은 여성과 소수자들은 광장에 모여 목소리를 높이고 있다. 우리가 꿈꾸는 민주주의는 성평등이 반드시 전제되어야 하기 때문이다.
한국여성의전화는 여성과 소수자의 인권이 보장되고, 혐오와 차별이 없는 민주주의의 실현을 위해 끝까지 싸우고 행동할 것이다.

[Statement by Korea Women's Hot-Line (KWHL) Commemorating Human Rights Day]
We will take action until democracy is realized
Today, December 10th, is Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day is a day to reflect on the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948. All people are born free and equal in dignity and rights. However, the state of human rights in South Korea is in severe crisis today, in 2024.
The person who violated democracy and the Constitution by pointing a gun at the citizens of his own country just a week ago still remains the Commander-in-Chief and President of South Korea. He never hid his true nature as a misogynist since his presidential campaign days and has exacerbated discrimination and violence by silencing women and minorities once elected president. Meanwhile, the actions of politicians who prioritize political gain over human rights and democracy have left South Korea in turmoil. As always, the task of protecting the human rights and democracy of South Korea lies in the hands of its citizens.
Women's rights has never been a priority in South Korea. Last year alone, the number of femicide victims exceeded 192, and over the past 15 years, at least 100 women have lost their lives to gender-based violence each year. Yet, no administration has taken the gravity of these numbers seriously.
Even in this very moment, as we call for the restoration of human rights and democracy in our society, the voices that deny the very humanity of women continue to persist. The secondary abuser of a sexual assault survivor has assumed the role of a so-called voice for the citizens, and the director of the opposition party’s education training institute doesn't hesitate to publicly objectify women participating in protests. Nonetheless, more and more women and minorities are gathering in the public square, raising their voices. This is because the democracy we dream of must be founded on gender equality.
Korea Women's Hot-Line will continue to fight and take action to guarantee the human rights of women and minorities and to realize a democracy free from hate and discrimination.
